Barcelona’s Port Olímpic advances its modernization with a high-performance 3R AWS100 weather station installed by Darrera

The new equipment enables real-time monitoring of meteorological conditions to optimize port operations and protect facilities against adverse weather events, while also making the information accessible to sailors and the public via the Weathercloud online platform.

As part of an ambitious transformation process aimed at consolidating its leadership in sustainability and the blue economy, Barcelona’s Port Olímpic has taken a strategic step in modernizing its infrastructure. In collaboration with Darrera, the port has incorporated a high-performance 3R AWS100 weather station. This new system enhances the port’s ability to monitor local weather conditions, helping to optimize port operations and safeguard facilities against severe weather. Furthermore, it democratizes access to meteorological information, making it available to both port users and the general public.

The 3R AWS100 station has been engineered for maximum precision, reliability, and quality. Installed on the iconic Harbour Master’s Office building, the system features a state-of-the-art compact sensor array integrating an ultrasonic anemometer with no moving parts, a thermo-hygrometer housed in a radiation shield, a barometer, and a pyranometer. In addition, it includes a tipping-bucket rain gauge installed separately. Both the compact sensor array and the rain gauge are mounted on stainless steel masts to ensure maximum resistance to corrosion caused by the marine environment. The entire system operates autonomously via solar power, completely eliminating the need for grid electricity.

The datalogger stores data in its internal memory and transmits it remotely to the cloud via a 4G connection. Thanks to the Weathercloud online platform, port staff can monitor meteorological conditions in real time, generate custom charts, print daily, monthly, and annual PDF reports, and export the historical database to CSV for local analysis. Additionally, Weathercloud enables the configuration of alerts for adverse weather events and the integration of data directly into the port’s website.

With more than 700 moorings and a prominent role in the city’s nautical leisure scene, Port Olímpic joins the extensive network of ports that rely on Darrera’s advanced meteorological monitoring solutions. This initiative reaffirms the port’s commitment to excellence, digitalization, and the continuous improvement of services for its users.
