Montserrat Aerial Cable Car enhances environmental monitoring with a weather station installed by Darrera

The new Vantage Pro2 automatic weather station enables the Montserrat Aerial Cable Car staff to monitor weather conditions in real time in one of Catalonia’s most unique natural environments.

Darrera has successfully supplied, installed, and commissioned a Vantage Pro2 automatic weather station at the facilities of the Montserrat Aerial Cable Car, a historic transport system that has connected the Monistrol de Montserrat station with the Montserrat Monastery since 1930 through a spectacular aerial journey offering breathtaking views of the Montserrat mountain range. Welcoming around 350,000 visitors each year, the Montserrat Aerial Cable Car has become one of the main gateways to the Montserrat complex and a benchmark for cable transport in Catalonia.

The unique characteristics of this environment, defined by its rugged terrain and dynamic microclimate, where weather conditions can change rapidly throughout the day, make accurate, reliable, and real-time meteorological information particularly important. In this context, continuous monitoring of wind speed and direction plays a key role, providing operational staff with essential information to support day-to-day operations and enable fast, well-informed decision-making.

In addition to wind measurements, the weather station continuously records temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and atmospheric pressure, while also calculating derived parameters such as dew point and wind chill. Together, these measurements provide a comprehensive overview of the environmental conditions surrounding the cable car.

To ensure immediate access to weather information, the station features an Ethernet communication system that automatically transmits the data to the WeatherLink online platform. Through the platform, Montserrat Aerial Cable Car staff can access both real-time observations and historical records from the control center or from any Internet-connected device, enabling continuous remote monitoring of local weather conditions.

At Darrera, we continue to deliver high-value environmental monitoring solutions for critical infrastructure where the availability of reliable, real-time information is essential for optimizing operations, enhancing safety, and supporting informed decision-making, even in demanding and iconic locations such as Montserrat.
